National Safety Day 2021: History, objectives, theme, and quotes

National Safety Day is observed on March 4 every year to commemorate the foundation of the National Safety Council, which aims to raise awareness about safety measures that need to be undertaken to prevent accidents and mishaps.

The objective of the day is to renew the commitment of employees and the general public to work safely and ensure the integration of a safe and sound work culture and lifestyle.

History

National Safety Day was observed for the first time in 1972, on the foundation day of the National Safety Council.

National Safety Council is a non-profit, self-financing and tripartite apex body at the national level.

It was set up by the Government of India, Ministry of Labour and Employment on 4 March 1965 to generate and develop a voluntary movement on Safety, Health, and Environment. It is an autonomous body.

Significance

The main objective and vision of the National Safety Council have remained the same - To protect and serve the society and foster a preventive culture and scientific mindset among people.
The campaign started as a single-day celebration on 4 March. But now has spread over a week from March 4-10.

Theme of the year

There is a new theme for National Safety Day every year. This year's theme is ‘Sadak Suraksha (Road Safety).’
